The Man Behind The Music
Born Sifiso Makalisa, Tich began his musical journey with classical piano lessons at the age of seven. He went on to further his studies at the University of Cape Town, graduating with an Honors Degree in Jazz Composition and Arrangement. Driven by a deep curiosity for sound, he expanded his expertise overseas, studying film scoring and audio engineering at Morley College London.
He has graced the stages of prestigious international festivals—including the North Sea Jazz Festival Netherlands, the London Jazz Festival UK, Grahamstown Arts Festival, the Joy of Jazz Festivals in South Africa and has performed at legendary venues such as London’s 606 Club, the Camden Jazz Cafe, The Green Dolphin along the way. Tich has recorded and shared stages with a diverse array of jazz and contemporary luminaries, including Judith Sephuma, Winston Mankunku, Selaelo Selota, Ivan Mazuze, Frank Paco, Alvin Dyers, Andrew Young, Nokukhanya Dhlamini, Max Vidima and David Morehead.
Tich’s creativity extends beyond live jazz. Between 2006 and 2008, he worked as a composer and jingle writer for Barry Kirsch Productions in Dubai. He also writes extensive library and production music for documentary, television, and film through platforms like Mamadance Music Solutions and Sonoton.
Having recently returned to his homeland, Tich is dedicated to contributing to music education and mentoring the next generation of Zimbabwean musicians, ensuring the country’s rich sonic heritage continues to thrive.
